Framus Netherlands – Episode 2: Javahula

Bali, Tahiti, Waikiki or Sumbawa. Framus created a furore with these exotic model names when the emerging West-German guitar manufacturer presented Hawaii-guitars to the market for the first time in the beginning 50's. The Hawaii-music had begun its triumphal procession in the US already in the 30's when in the beginning 50's the Germans also started to get enthused for the Hula-dance.

Supported by leading musicians like Heinz Reinhardt of the Framus-String-Band, several models were developed, amongst others the remarkable double-neck guitar „Electra Orchestra“. The lap-steels, equipped with electronics, could live without a resonance body, thus having rapidly got the nickname „jamming boards“ by the instrument builders.

The best known Dutch band of this genre was celebrated in the Netherlands already in the 40's. The „Kilima Hawaiians“ hat their break-through in 1953 with the song „Es hängt ein Pferdehalfter an der Wand“ („There's a headstall hanging on the wall“) (by Carson Robison), which has been sold more than a million times and for which they got the Golden Record in 1954. Theo Ehrlicher (1916-2007), probably Europe's best-known virtuoso at his time and a member of the „Kilima Hawaiians“, could get enthused for Framus guitars. Hence, his portrait adorns the first booklet for Hawaii-guitars.
